How to make the most of your student life

Many people say that your student life is the brightest period of your life. Understandably many people disagree with that statement once they enter university. Here are a few tips from me to make the most of your university life.

1. Make connections

Develop your professional network; be open-minded. You never know how can 1 connection may change your life. That person could change your influence and lead you to more life choices.

"How can I make connections?"

Attend university clubs, activities, events:

Attend events and clubs that you are interested in. In this way you can meet those people who have same interests as you and you will definitely have common topic to start off a conversation with.

2. Try new activities

Sometimes new opportunities encourage you to broaden your mind and develop soft and hard skills. Try to develop your abilities as soon as you can because it is better to attach these skills and discover new ones and work on them. Learn from your mistakes and overcome setbacks. The sooner you start, the sooner you can climb the career ladder and become the best version of yourself.

"What kind of new activities can I try?"
  • Volunteering

  • Internship

  • Debates

  • Scientific conferences

  • Choir

  • Acting classes

  • Competitions

  • Dance classes

3. Create your own student life

If you have an idea for event or would like to have a go at your organisational skills, you can organise any event! Think outside of the box, embrace your creative thinking; attach your leadership skills, learn to work in team, work on your confidence, charisma and public speaking. Be a versatile person, learn how to come to grips with various issues.

After all, who knows, maybe tomorrow your experience and event may be lead to someones success.

I and studying to be a simultaneous interpreter in Kazakh Ablai Khan University of International relations and World languages. There are 2 majors that are quite difficult to study for at my university and my major is one of them. When I was a freshman, my group-mates told me that there is no student life at our university; all we do is studying. I knew that this was not true.

I used to attend chess classes and acting classes at my uni and I experienced "student life" because I made steps to discover it. In comparison with my group-mates, I have met and connected with many students from other faculties, I participated in my university's events and attended scientific conferences. I also gained experience in linguistic realm and wrote scientific work. I am happy to have made steps towards discovering student life.

The most interesting thing for me is when I became 3rd year student this year; I started to ignore my student life because I had work and homework to do. I had my speaking club sessions and I started to neglect student life. I had become just like my group-mates within the 1st year of study.

My friend started to participate in student life and invited us to university concerts and competitions; I felt happy as I regained this opportunity after so long.

I can conclude that everything depends on your intention and desire. If you look forward to have an unforgettable student life, go ahead and make some unforgettable memories!
